Derek Ferguson has criticised Todd Cantwell’s tendency to get involved in controversy, admitting “he just does my nut in at times” despite being a good player for Rangers.

After a season of regression at Ibrox the attacking midfielder’s status at the club heading into the transfer window is uncertain.

The “jury is out” on the former Norwich man according to Chris Jack [Rangers Review, 28 May], and a summer transfer exit on loan has now been mooted by Peter Grant [Go Radio, 5 June].

Gary Keown even claimed the Englishman should be sold this summer in the Scottish Mail on Sunday print edition on 26 May (pages 98 and 99), despite a decent performance in the Scottish Cup final loss to Celtic.

Ferguson believes Cantwell has a “lot to like” to his game but the frequency with which he gets caught up in “verbals” elsewhere infuriates him, with fellow former Norwich man Chris Sutton a long-running opponent.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “I like Todd Cantwell as a football player, there’s a lot to like in terms of his enthusiasm and his quality at times on the ball.

“But he just does my nut in at times that he wants to get involved with too many verbals with other players.

“Do your talking with your feet. He just gets caught up with too much, social media as well, he seems to be on that a hell of a lot, making statements and putting stuff out there.

“It just riles boys. I prefer guys who keep quiet and are not on social media but do their talking on the park.

Rangers
Rangers manager Philippe Clement hasn’t always seemed convinced by Todd Cantwell.

Does Todd Cantwell have a future at Rangers under Philippe Clement?

Cantwell was virtually an immediate star under Michael Beale when he arrived but has never looked to have the same status under Clement.

The relationship between the two was said to be close to “breaking point” after he was substituted by the Belgian in the first half early in his reign [Daily Record, 4 December].

And while that situation appeared to even out as the campaign wore on Cantwell was often left on the bench in favour of Tom Lawrence, despite neither delivering fireworks, so if a reasonable offer came in this summer it would no longer be a shock if Rangers cashed in.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have secured another new signing already this summer as an ace has posted an exit message online.
