Everton will challenge Leicester City to the signing of free agent Yusuf Yazici, according to Jeunes Footeux.
The French media outlet reported on 7 September that the Foxes are leading the race after discussions with the player’s entourage. However, the Blues are planning a hijack and have themselves made contact.
Yazici is available on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract with Lille at the end of the season and has been the subject of intense interest as of late from Lazio and Bournemouth, as well as Leicester and Everton.
The attacker is said to be open to a fresh challenge as he weighs up his options.
Everton enquire about Yusuf Yazici signing
Sean Dyche’s side have endured a torrid start to the 2024/25 Premier League season, sitting as they do at the bottom of the league table after three consecutive defeats.
There was a sense of optimism around Goodison Park recently after Kevin Thelwell supplied the Blues boss with seven much-needed summer additions to his personnel.
Given the financial constraints at the club, Thelwell did what he could with the limited resources at his disposal but has seemingly not done enough in the summer transfer window, with injuries to several key stars haunting the side and the current squad performing far below the required standard.
A move for Yazici, which could be sanctioned this month on a Bosman transfer, could be a shrewd acquisition for the club to provide more attacking depth. But at the moment, it is hard to find a place for the midfielder among the current options.
The Turkish international was a stalwart for Lille, but Iliman Ndiaye has looked the part playing behind the striker [Liverpool Echo] and it would make little sense to limit the qualities of either player by moving one of them out of their preferred position to fit them both into the side.
On paper, Yazici has all the tools to become an instant success at Goodison Park and would bring Champions League experience with him to the blue half of Merseyside.
But it is safe to say there are more pressing areas of the pitch that need addressing if Everton plan to enter the free agent market.
