Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the Merseyside giants are going to have to sell some of their star players this summer to resolve their profit and sustainability (PSR) issues.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested talk around Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jarrad Branthwaite leaving Everton has gone quiet after they have both been linked with a move away.

Football Insider revealed last month Everton will need to sell at least one of their “big” stars before they submit their accounts at the end of June to help balance the books.

But the Merseysiders are making efforts to ensure Branthwaite won’t be sold after it was revealed the club are in talks with the 21-year-old defender about remaining at Goodison Park next season.

Everton sales on the cards as PSR concerns continue

Wyness is adamant Everton will have to offload players once the transfer window reopens despite the club recently insisting some of their big names won’t have to leave.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I have always felt sales are going to be inevitable at some stage.

“They are going to have to balance the books.

“There have been some very bullish noises coming out from the club, saying ‘No, we don’t have a problem, we don’t have to sell’.

“But then again, you would say that, wouldn’t you? That’s the case of any negotiation.

“I do think they are going to have to sell to resolve the PSR issue once and for all. Who it’s going to be, that’s the £61million question.

“It’s certainly gone quiet around Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle and there is nothing really around Branthwaite’s move.

“There is nobody there really that’s coming up in terms of being an active transaction.

“But there is no doubt there will be a lot of discussions behind the scenes.”
