Exclusive: Charlton & Oxford race to sign Coventry City star, deal done in days

Charlton Athletic and Oxford United are battling it out to sign Coventry City striker Matt Godden, sources have told Football Insider.

Godden is set to leave the CBS Arena this summer and sources say a deal should be completed as early as next week as clubs race to secure his signature.

The 34-year-old’s contract is set to expire next summer and with no progress made towards a renewal, he will be moved on in the coming days.

Interest from Oxford has emerged following their promotion to the Championship as they look to bring in an experienced option to help them adapt to the new level.

Charlton’s interest in Godden, meanwhile, comes after Football Insider revealed that Birmingham City have agreed a deal to sign star striker Alfie May.

Godden signed for Coventry in 2019 and has since gone on to make 156 appearances for the club, scoring 50 goals and providing 11 assists.

He drifted towards the periphery of Mark Robins’ squad towards the end of last season, but remained a key player under the boss as he made 35 league appearances.

His nine goals last time out helped fire Coventry to a ninth-placed finish and an FA Cup semi-final, where he played 15 minutes as they fell to a penalty defeat against Man United.

Both Charlton and Oxford are looking to bolster their attacking options going into the new season, with Godden’s experience and availability elevating him to the top of their lists.

The striker’s most recent spell in League One was in 2019-20 as he helped fire Coventry to promotion with 14 goals in 26 games – form Charlton bosses hope he can recreate should they sign him.

Oxford, however, will be confident that their position in the Championship can help them pip their rivals to the experienced number nine.

In other news, Archie Gray is on standby to undergo a medical at Tottenham.
