Exclusive: Club agree to sign Nottingham Forest defender

Nottingham Forest defender Aaron Donnelly is set to join Colchester on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

The League Two club have reached an agreement to sign the 21-year-old after beating his former loan club Dundee in the race.

Donnelly spent last season on loan at Dundee, making 21 appearances for the Scottish Premiership outfit.

The centre-back is well down the pecking order at Forest and they are happy to loan him out in search of regular first-team football.

Donnelly made the move to Forest from Northern Irish outfit Dungannon Swifts in 2019 before signing his first professional deal with the club in 2021.

That deal is set to expire at the end of this season and the defender will get the chance to impress in League Two this term.

Nottingham Forest youngster set to join Colchester

The move comes after Donnelly made his debut for Northern Ireland’s senior side in a friendly against Andorra in June.

He previously went on loan with Port Vale in League One in the second half of the 2022-23 campaign, making 20 consecutive third-tier starts as they survived relegation.

Donnelly has played just once for Forest’s senior side and has turned out for their Under-21s this season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are well-stocked in defence having added Serbia international Nikola Milenkovic to their ranks.

Colchester have won one of their opening three League Two games after finishing three points above the drop zone last season.
