Exclusive: Man City want new keeper after ‘Massive’ Ederson twist

Man City are plotting a move to sign a new goalkeeper if Ederson makes the switch to Saudi Arabia in this summer’s transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Stefan Ortega is seen as a capable replacement as City’s number one, but they will need to add further depth.

This comes shortly after Football Insider revealed the club have opened the door for Ederson to leave after a “massive” offer from Saudi Arabia.

Should the Brazilian opt to leave, City would be left with Ortega and Scott Carson as the club’s goalkeepers, and they will move to bring in another option before the window closes.

Players and staff at the Etihad view Ortega, 31, as the natural replacement for Ederson after his impressive displays when called upon in recent seasons.

Ortega stepped up at times during Ederson’s absence last season, making 20 appearances across all competitions and nine in the Premier League, keeping eight clean sheets.

The shot-stopper moved to City in 2022, arriving on a free transfer after he left German outfit Arminia Bielefeld, and has since made 34 appearances for the club.

Rather than spending big on a new first-choice, sources at the Etihad say City are priming the German to step into the first team while a backup will arrive in the transfer window.

However, Ederson may opt to remain at the Etihad despite the offer on the table from Saudi Arabia after Pep Guardiola insisted the decision will rest with the player.

Ortega was chosen to start the FA Cup final defeat to Man United and the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid in a show of faith in his ability.

Now, he may be tasked with taking the step up into regular first-team football while the club search for new options in the transfer market.
