Exclusive: Manchester City succeed where Newcastle failed as they land top target as sporting director
Hugo Viana has been selected as Txiki Begiristain's successor - is he the right man for Manchester City?
Manchester City sources have confirmed to TBR Football that they have agreed terms with Hugo Viana to become their new sporting director.
TBR Football confirmed that Viana was the leading candidate earlier this week after it was revealed that Txiki Begiristain would be stepping down as sporting director.
Sources have confirmed to us that Txiki has picked his successor and Viana is the man they have opted for.
Hugo Viana agrees to take Etihad job
TBR Football can confirm that Viana has agreed to make the move after turning down the chance to join his former club Newcastle in the summer.
41-year-old Viana will make the move to City next year, with Txiki departing at the end of the season.
Viana has been with Sporting since 2018 and helped oversee two title wins. His work has been widely praised assembling a squad full of burgeoning talent including the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Pedro Goncalves and Gonzalo Inacio.
Ruben Amorim linked with City switch
Viana’s decision to bring Ruben Amorim to the club is seen as a stroke of genius as he sanctioned paying Braga €10million for a head coach who had had barely two-months experience as head coach.
Since then Amorim has emerged as one of the most highly-rated coaches in the world and indeed he is already being linked with a move to City with Viana as a possible replacement for Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola’s current deal is due to expire next summer and he is yet to make a decision on his future. City, though, have played down suggestions that Amorim is already lined up to come in.
