Tottenham will not entertain bids for Cristian Romero as Real Madrid plan to reignite their long-term interest, sources have told Football Insider.
The World Cup winner, 26, has been on the shortlist for a long time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid had already been short at centre-back this term but in a new twist, Brazil international Eder Militao has suffered a serious knee injury and will be out of action for an extended period.
However, sources say Spurs are desperate to keep hold of the centre-back despite advances from Los Blancos – who are also missing David Alaba with a knee injury.
It is believed Tottenham are planning to beef up their defensive options in January, rather than weaken their rearguard.
Romero is out of contract in June 2027 having yet to extend his deal since signing for Spurs in 2022.
The 39-cap Argentina international has made 11 appearances across all competitions this term but has been rested often in the Europa League.
Tottenham will not consider Real Madrid bid for Romero
Micky van de Ven is currently out with a hamstring injury but is set to return to action after the international break.
Radu Dragusin has stepped in during the Dutchman’s absence but has struggled during an inconsistent spell for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Ben Davies is also an option in the heart of the Spurs defence but has only played 29 minutes in the Premier League this term.
Tottenham sit 10th in the table after losing 2-1 at home against Ipswich on Sunday (10 November).
In other news, Postecoglou sack update emerges from Tottenham.
