Expert View: Tottenham summer signing to lead to loan exit for up-and-coming youngster

John Wenham believes Tottenham gem George Abbott will be sent out on a season-long loan.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose feels that Archie Gray is slightly ahead of Abbott in the pecking order in North London.

Gray has featured in all five of Spurs’ pre-season matches thus far, with Abbott being handed minutes against QPR and Bayern Munich.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has suggested that a temporary move away from the club would be best for the 18-year-old.

“I’m not so sure Abbott would be handed many first-team opportunities this season,” Wenham said.

“Abbott is very versatile, but Gray is a similar profile of player to him. I think that Gray is just slightly ahead of Abbott in terms of his development, which we have seen during pre-season in terms of the minutes both players have played.

“Therefore, I think Abbott will be sent out on loan this season and that is probably what is best for him. If he could get 40 games under his belt that would be really positive.”

Abbott was a key performer for Spurs’ hugely successful under-21 side last season.

His fine form was recognised with the 18-year-old selected to travel with Tottenham on their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

While the experience would have been hugely beneficial for the player, it is unlikely that he would receive many first-team minutes this season.

There are too many midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order, including Gray. Therefore, a loan move could be the perfect solution.

It would allow Abbott to continue his development and return to North London more equipped to break into the first-team under Ange Postecoglou.
