I hold the record for most Premier League defeats but was still voted into my nation's greatest ever team

Losing a game of football is never a nice feeling.

Players will stew on it for several days until the next match comes around – a chance to put things right – and if another defeat ensues, pressure builds.

Fans grow restless, the media pile on, and nerves creep into performances on the pitch.

So, imagine that feeling as a Premier League player, but on 200 separate occasions.

Mark Schwarzer – in this case – need not imagine, as the Australian has been there and done it, but still emerged a legend.

Mark Schwarzer – the man with the most Premier League defeats, but yet a hero for his country

In fairness to the Aussie, you have to make a lot of Premier League appearances to endure 200 defeats, and the man from North Richmond did manage to secure a result in his other 314 outings.

Schwarzer, who was surprised by Liverpool signing Giorgi Mamardashvili, amassed 514 Premier League appearances across spells at Middlesbrough, Fulham, Chelsea and Leicester City – which puts him eighth on the Premier League appearance list behind Emile Heskey – keeping 153 clean sheets and conceding 653 goals in total.

As aforesaid, the glovesman lost 200 of these 514 outings – more than any other player in Premier League history as you can see below.

Becoming Australia’s greatest ever goalkeeper

Despite his many defeats in the Premier League, Schwarzer still hung up his gloves in November 2013 with the title of Australia’s greatest goalkeeper to his name – as voted by fans, players and pundits after a lengthy process.

He was also consequently named as the goalkeeper in Australia’s greatest ever team at the ceremony in Sydney back in July 2012 – an XI which also featured Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell – after amassing 110 caps in total for the Socceroos.

Therefore, while some may have struggled to enjoy retirement with the title of most Premier League defeats attached to their name, Schwarzer – who selected Niclas Fullkrug as his signing of last summer – still has plenty of fond memories to focus on instead.
