Stevie Clifford finds it “perplexing” that Cyriel Dessers has allegedly asked to leave Rangers this summer, adding the striker has heavily featured in training images posted by the club on Wednesday (3 July).

Clifford was speaking on The Rangers Review podcast [4 July] as doubts continue over Dessers’ future at Ibrox beyond this summer.

Dessers scored 16 league goals last season but question marks have arisen over his chance conversion, with many feeling he could even have doubled that tally since arriving from Cremonese.

The 29-year-old has been the subject of heavy interest from Greek side PAOK, and had reportedly handed in a transfer request [Daily Record, 26 June], but has been featured by the club in published images of the squad’s pre-season training regime.

Clifford, of Four Lads Had A Dream, said: “I’m not sure how true the stuff is about [Dessers] asking for a transfer. I find that quite perplexing unless he’s been told he’s not going to be first choice.

“I know he’s had challenges, especially with the fans, but he seems a player who has thoroughly enjoyed it with us so far.

“What I find interesting is that he’s certainly pictured in all the training posts from the club, and it seems his cup final injury wasn’t as bad as first feared.”

Does Cyriel Dessers stay or leave Rangers?

Clifford was of the view that Rangers may have cashed straight in on Dessers back in January had fellow striker Danilo not been struck down with injury.

Having only been at Ibrox a year, the striker has had nine professional clubs and has only reached 40 league appearances with one – FC Utrecht between 2017 and 2019 – but he is just five away from that number at Rangers.

The Nigeria international’s scoring record means he will always attract a fair volume of interest, with clubs in four separate nations appearing to be eyeing a move as the Gers demand the £4.5million they paid for Dessers last summer.

The club’s recruitment, despite a handful of new arrivals already being confirmed, is far from complete. Numerous attacking targets are on the radar for the club’s scouting team headed up by Nils Koppen.

Rangers are preparing for life after Dessers and are looking to adapt in the market to any scenario, but will not accept less than their initial fee for the number nine.

In other Rangers news, obstacles remain in place before the club can agree to begin the new season at Hampden Park.
