Agent responds hysterically at claim Rangers deal for int'l midfielder is off

Kenny McLean’s agent Alan Houldsworth has been left in hysterics following the latest transfer update out of Rangers in the summer window.

Reports had suggested the Gers were keen to sign the Scottish international, but it has now been suggested that the Light Blues have pulled the plug on the deal due to a disagreement over personal terms [Rangers Review, 3 July].

The Norwich midfielder is believed to have wanted a longer-term contract than Philippe Clement’s side would offer this summer, but Houldsworth who helped him agree his last contract at Carrow Road has shared his reaction.

Writing on X on Wednesday (3 July) Houldsworth posted a string of six laughing emojis as he reposted the initial report suggesting McLean’s summer move to Ibrox was no longer on the cards.

Will Kenny McLean join Rangers in the summer transfer window?

Houldsworth’s reaction would suggest that he doesn’t believe McLean’s move to Ibrox this summer has broken down because of the reasons cited by the Rangers Review, otherwise, his response would be rather strange.

Whether or not a deal to bring the 32-year-old north of the border was ever close remains to be seen, but his agent’s reaction would suggest that neither he nor his client is exactly cut up by the reported breakdown in negotiations.

Philippe Clement does need to add a bit of experience to his side before the start of the season having lost the likes of John Lundstram, Borna Barisic and Ryan Jack this summer, so in that sense, McLean would have been an ideal fit.

But the Gers cannot afford to break their wage or contract structure for a single player. The knock-on effects of that decision could have been huge and it would have only caused the Belgian more problems in the long run.

Hopefully, another midfielder can be found before pre-season preparations step up another gear so that Rangers don’t lack that bit of knowhow that cost them at times last season.
