The Friedkin Group have made attempts to improve the relationship between Everton and the Premier League already, The Guardian reports.
According to the paper on 28 November the impending new Toffees owners have taken steps to mend fences with the league following a series of clashes between the two sides during the latter years of Farhad Moshiri’s reign.
Everton were charged over PSR breaches twice and deducted a total of eight points last season as a result, while the continuing dispute over interest charges relating to the stadium build has a third penalty hanging over the club.
The Toffees have also been at loggerheads with Richard Masters’ office more recently over associated party transaction (APT) rules – Everton switched from backing Man City to supporting the executive’s position last week before new regulations were voted in – and multi-club ownership.
But with Dan Friedkin and company due to takeover the club from Moshiri within weeks, and the Premier League currently conducting due diligence on the deal, the Americans have reportedly been working on building a more positive relationship.
Dan Friedkin to lift Everton standing after Farhad Moshiri turmoil
Football Insider Opinion
While it is unclear exactly what the Friedkins have done to improve the relationship with the league it has to be a positive sign.
Familiarity often breeds contempt and if Toffees supporters have grown sick of Moshiri and his staff during the endless chaos of the past few seasons then that is quite possibly true at the league office as well.
So on the most basic level a change at the top will surely do everyone good, and if Friedkin can lift the club’s fortunes in a material sense while helping to lighten the dim view that often seems to be taken by the authorities then there should be hope for less drama in the future.
The Roma chief is already set to remove concerns about the financial footing of Everton, but the quicker the ongoing squabble over PSR calculations can be settled the better.
There has often been a suspicion on the blue half of Merseyside that Masters and the Premier League had it in for the Toffees, especially after falling foul of financial rules multiple times and then being hit by two sets of punishments within the same season last term.
Whether there was any truth to those suspicions is impossible to confirm and would surely be rejected by all involved, but if the new owner can move the club out of a position to have to worry about that sort of thing for the foreseeable future he will be off to a decent start.
