Dan Friedkin did not waste any time in leaving Rome after sacking Daniele De Rossi, as he leads the bid to take over Everton, according to The Athletic.
The news outlet reported on 27 September that Italian media have claimed Roma have become “soulless” under TFG’s ownership with many batting back against their decision-making.
The “ruthless” decision, as Paul Scholes called it [The Overlap, 25 September], made by the Friedkins did not go down well with many of the ultras in the Italian capital. De Rossi was relieved of his duties after a start of just one win in five Serie A matches.
The Athletic has now reported on the extent of the discontent in Italy as Friedkin closes in on a deal to buy Everton.
The report said: “In response to De Rossi’s dismissal, former sporting director Walter Sabatini said the Friedkins were living in the ‘delirium of omnipotence’ and there have been posters around the city with ‘Yankee go home’ on them.
“There has been plenty of change behind the scenes and regular churn.
“CEO Lina Souloukou stood down following supporter protests over the weekend. The club’s General Counsel is expected to oversee her duties until a replacement is found.”
A deal is now in prospect for the Friedkin Group to acquire control at Goodison Park, buying Farhad Moshiri’s entire 94.1% stake.
Dan Friedkin rushes out of Rome amid Everton deal
Roma fans and regional media appear conflicted on Friedkin, whose investment portfolio is tidy but whose footballing decisions have at times been met with hostility.
De Rossi is on a permanent pedestal in Rome, with the club icon having been born in the city and made over 600 appearances for I Giallorossi.
The reality of an “outsider” in Friedkin masterminding the sacking of a godly figure at the Stadio Olimpico was never going to be smooth sailing.
On Merseyside, it appears more hopeful, particularly from a coaching point of view with the American expected to back Sean Dyche once the takeover has been completed [GiveMeSport, 23 September].
However, recent reports suggest the deal will not be entirely boxed off until 2025, when Rights & Media Funding will approve the complete transaction [Giulia Bould, 26 September].
