David Moyes is still the favourite to take over as Everton manager if Sean Dyche is relieved of his duties, according to Graeme Bailey.
The Toffees’ start to the 2024/25 season has been far from ideal as the club currently find themselves 19th in the Premier League with just one point to their name, meaning pressure has built upon Dyche’s head over the last few weeks.
The Friedkin Group pulled a massive U-turn on buying the club and, should their takeover go through, changes are more than likely going to be made with Bailey even sharing that moves could happen in as little as two weeks’ time during the international break.
Speaking to Everton News on 24 September, Bailey shared his thoughts on Moyes potentially becoming the new Everton boss.
“From my understanding, it’s still David Moyes, he’s the one to come in to solidify the situation. He’s the one who’s going to turn it around quickly, and even if that’s only on a deal until the end of the season, it can help cement his legacy at the club. Not that he needs to,” he said.
“I think Moyes until the end of the season makes all the sense in the world.
“It’s going to take an awful lot for Sean Dyche. He’s going to have to get something out of these next two games before the international break to still be in charge.
“I suspect that Moyes might be back in by the international break. That’s my personal opinion. I hope for Sean Dyche it doesn’t but there comes a time when they have to make a change.”
Everton need to give Sean Dyche time
Dyche is a manager who can sometimes be like marmite: you either love him or you hate him.
Since being in charge of Everton, Dyche has helped guide them through point deductions and perhaps some of the most difficult times in the club’s history.
So, even though the Toffees’ season hasn’t quite gone to plan so far, it feels like Everton should at least afford him the chance to try and turn things around.
Their summer transfer window was fairly solid but with the likes of Armando Broja not yet featuring due to injury, there’s still plenty more Dyche can get from his squad.
Broja’s inclusion in the squad alongside the imminent return of Jarrad Branthwaite are both still yet to come this season, with both events potentially being pivotal to their campaign.
The latter of the two could be closer to a return than many may think as he was recently involved in an Everton under-21s game [Joe Thomas, 22 September].
If things carry on as they are then sure, Dyche should be given his marching orders. But for now, especially while the takeover process is still ongoing, it makes more sense for things to stay the same.
