'Get up you, man' - Ex-Ibrox ace explodes at 'Infuriating' Rangers ace v St Mirren live on Sportsound

Cyriel Dessers was blasted for being “infuriating” despite proving to be the “difference” in the ugly Rangers victory vs St Mirren, by Steven Thompson.

The former Gers striker criticised the current when live on BBC Sportsound on 27 October after the Nigerian went down easily in a second-half coming together with goalscorer Alex Gogic in the 2-1 home win at Ibrox.

Dessers, 29, was dropped from the starting XI by Philippe Clement but came off the bench at half-time and did some excellent work to create the winning goal for Vaclav Cerny, and Thompson admitted the win was down to him, but was extremely irritated by his other play.

Thompson cut in during the commentary to say (4.50pm): “Get up you man.”

He went on: “Dessers goes down so easily, so often. Every time he’s touched he’s on the ground. It’s infuriating to watch, it really is.”

Commentator Thomas Duncan said: “It’s just encapsulated [it] because he’s not really done much apart from set up the goal which was brilliant. But that’s what he’s like as a player”.

“He is yeah,” Thompson agreed, “I think recently he’s looked a bit frustrated, his goals haven’t been coming at a regular rate. His link-up play in the last couple of games that I watched wasn’t good, but he’s been the difference today.

“A very, very important contribution for a very, very important goal.”

Dessers looks set to forever be impossible to fully assess as his plus points and negative points often contradict each other, and his consistency swings so wildly.

Early in the season he was again scoring some crucial goals with Clement unable to call on any other strikers, with Danilo out injured and Igamane’s introduction to the first-team long-delayed following his summer arrival.

In recent weeks his form has been much more frustrating, so when he walked off the pitch upset at being poked in the eye during the 4-0 win over FCSB on 24 October, and Igamane came on to score his first for the club, it was little surprise that the Moroccan was given the nod to start back in the Scottish Premiership.

But fortunes swung back towards the senior striker as the youngster got booked in the second minute and failed to offer much of anything positive as Rangers stunk up Ibrox in the first half.

In what was a slog of a performance it was Dessers who produced one of the only moments of real quality in the game when he surged down the left inside channel, cut round the St Mirren defender at the byline and cut it back for Cerny to tap home in the 69th minute for the winner.

Yet, as Thompson admitted, it is so rarely all good or all bad with the former Cremonese man, and after having such a vital impact in response to losing his place in the line-up he still found time to frustrate those watching.

It would still be no shock to see him back in the XI at Pittodrie for the clash with Aberdeen that has been tipped to be so crucial for Clement’s job on 30 October [Michael Stewart, 21 October].

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are expected to be able to afford to sack Clement if they need to.
