Graham Potter is willing to take the West Ham manager’s job on an interim basis until the end of the season if Julen Lopetegui is sacked, according to talkSPORT.
Football Insider previously reported that the former Brighton and Chelsea manager is in pole position to take over at The London Stadium if the Spaniard loses his job.
It is also understood that the Englishman has been in advanced talks about the role, and it appears he may have come to a decision.
Potter is apparently willing to take charge on a deal until next summer with West Ham said to be considering a short-term appointment to keep them away from the relegation zone.
Lopetegui is expected to lose his job with the Hammers if they are beaten by Wolves – whose manager Gary O’Neil is likely to be removed whatever the result at The London Stadium on Monday night.
West Ham short-term appointment could work for club and Potter
A move that sees the 49-year-old take over from Lopetegui on a short-term basis for all involved here.
It would give the Hammers what looks to be a safe pair of hands for this role, with Potter possessing experience of the Premier League and exceeding expectations with Brighton in particular.
That should make him a reliable option to guide West Ham to safety, when they can re-assess their options at the end of the season, which may include keeping him on.
It is also understood that Potter previously turned down a role with Leicester last summer, as he wanted to remain in the Premier League.
He would therefore likely be reluctant to stay beyond the end of this season, if West Ham were relegated to the Championship.
A short-term deal like this would give him and the club an easy get-out if things went wrong, and so with this issue dealt with, Lopetegui should feel under more pressure than ever to get a result against Wolves.
In other news, West Ham have stepped up their attempts to sign a striker on loan in January.
