'Hate to say it' - Sky Sports pundit slams what exit-bound Rangers ace has done, 'Career Now on the Slide'

Todd Cantwell has only proven Chris Sutton right by showing that he doesn’t have the mentality to play for Rangers where he will eventually realise that was “as good as it got”, says Kris Boyd.

The Sky Sports pundit has been highly-critical of the exit-bound Ibrox midfielder in his Scottish Sun column on 26 July, accusing him of seeing himself as “big time” after Philippe Clement revealed he had requested to leave the club.

Ex-Gers striker Boyd says Cantwell only has himself to blame for not becoming a star at the club, as he didn’t justify his place in the side often enough, and claimed the former Norwich man “could have been” Matt O’Riley if he’d shown the same application during adversity as the Celtic star but will leave with his career “on the slide”.

Boyd wrote: “There has been plenty from him on social media, though, with various digs at folk.

“But I’m sorry, his performances only underlined the criticism he got, and showed that a lot of people were right with what they said about the player.

“I hate to say it, but Chris Sutton for one, got it bang on when he doubted Cantwell had the mentality to be a Rangers player.

“All Cantwell did was prove Sutty right.”

Kris Boyd launches into Rangers ace after Philippe Clement reveal

Cantwell and fellow former Norwich man Sutton have had a long-running feud since they ended up on either side of the Old Firm divide, which probably says more about the pundit that the Ibrox man.

The 26-year-old looked a major asset to the Light Blues under Michael Beale two seasons ago and had the former manager’s reign not fallen apart he still might be.

But things have been the same under Clement and as the controversies around his behaviour on-pitch and status off it increasingly outweighed his actual impact in terms of goals and assists it is perhaps little surprise that a departure is now on the cards.

He has been expected to leave for most of the summer as it is [Rangers Review, 3 July] as Clement overhauled a squad which collapsed late in the season.

The manager has long been suspected of not seeing eye to eye with the talented midfielder [Daily Record, 22 July] so an exit would have come as no great shock either way.

And despite the Belgian’s claim that the pair have a “really good relationship” as he revealed the transfer request [Sky Sports, 25 July] the inevitable effect of returning to a post-match interview specifically to say a player has been left in the B Team after asking to leave certainly hints otherwise.

In other Rangers news: the Light Blues have tabled a new offer to land an experienced new signing right where they need one.
