'Here we go': Romano says 'remarkable' £59m player linked with Tottenham now set for Conte's Napoli

Tottenham Hotspur are up and running in the summer transfer window and chances are they’re only just getting started.

Spurs have one signing over the line so far, bringing Archie Gray to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Leeds United.

Tottenham are likely to be busy over the coming weeks as Ange Postecoglou seeks more top additions to his squad.

Spurs qualified for the Europa League so they’ll need more strength in depth to ensure they can handle the additional workload.

Although Tottenham will fancy their chances of signing top talents ahead of other clubs, some will slip through the net.

For instance, a “brilliant” defender who has been linked with Spurs in recent months is reportedly set to join Antonio Conte at Napoli.

Tottenham target Alessandro Buongiorno seals Napoli deal

The player in question is Torino centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno, one of Serie A’s standout rising stars last term.

Back in April, Calciomercato claimed Spurs had made contact with the Granata to enquire how much a move for Buongiorno would cost.

And in May, Football Italia reported that there was interest in Buongiorno from Tottenham, Inter Milan, Juventus and Napoli.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has taken to X to declare “here we go” on Buongiorno to Napoli, with the “final point agreed tonight”.

The Italian is set to pen a five-year contract with a release clause worth €70million (£59million) and a medical is scheduled for Thursday, added Romano.

Who is Tottenham target Alessandro Buongiorno?

Alessandro Buongiorno is a 25-year-old centre-back who can also play at left-back, has been starring for Torino, and made Italy’s Euro 2024 squad.

He is a boyhood Torino fan who joined their youth setup aged seven and has been on their books for the entirety of his career thus far.

The 6ft 3in defender took in loans at fellow Italian clubs Carpi and Trapani before returning to Torino in 2020/21 and becoming a regular.

Buongiorno has made 105 competitive appearances for his club, and has also won four caps for the Azzurri.

He has been lauded by Football Italia’s Carlo Garganese for his reading of the game, his aerial prowess, his aggressive play and his threat from set pieces.

Football Talent Scout‘s Jacek Kulig has deemed him “one of the most underrated players in Italy”, “one of the most interesting centre-backs in Serie A” and a “remarkable” player.

Buongiorno looked like a good shout for Tottenham, who have done well in the Italian market in recent years, but it looks like Conte has won this transfer battle.
