Nico Raskin was branded “dreadful” for his aimless pass during a terrible Rangers first half against St Mirren, live on BBC Sportsound.
Commentator Thomas Duncan reacted live on the match commentary on 27 October, with pundit Steven Thompson equally unimpressed, as the Belgian fired a pass way off its intended target of Mohamed Diomande, before gesticulating and blaming the Ivorian for it.
The sequence gave away possession to Elvis Bwomono and ultimately led to the equaliser, as Diomande fouled the Ugandan, the subsequent free kick into the box was headed behind from a corner and Alex Gogic headed the next delivery past Jack Butland, in what Duncan and Thompson felt was a bizarrely-bad first 45.
Thompson cut away mid-sentence to say (3.24pm): “Oh that’s a poor pass.”
Duncan agreed: “That’s dreadful from Raskin. He’s complaining about it to Diomande. It went to Bwomono and then Diomande’s given away the free kick.
“Rangers just almost bafflingly slack in this opening quarter despite their lead.”
Thompson added: “Aye, they’re really poor. This is the thing, they’ve had one effort on goal and it’s led to a goal almost fortuitously, but they have been so poor and you can just feel the stadium as well, it’s really, really flat.”
Mohamed Diomande blamed for Rangers teammate’s sloppiness
There was more than enough blame to go around in the first half at Ibrox as the Light Blues laboured to a concerning, and somewhat fortunate, 2-1 win.
Diomande had opened the scoring early with the first Gers attack, as Raskin’s shot bounced off him, then the keeper, and fell kindly to be slotted home.
He was well short of his best, along with nearly everyone else, but it was certainly Raskin that caused the sequence of events that drew St Mirren level, despite having started as one of the brighter spots in a dismal early showing.
Had Rangers otherwise been rolling along on a wave of good form it would be tempting to chalk the performance up to a rough day at the office and a necessary escape after grinding out a win.
But when it was the first league outing since the similarly turgid 1-0 loss at Kilmarnock it was all the more concerning.
The 4-0 win in the Europa League against FCSB was a welcome reminder of what this side can put together when it suits then, with Raskin’s re-emergence next to Connor Barron in midfield a particular bright spot.
So it would be an overreaction to suggest that there is discord within in the squad, but players performing badly and then pointing fingers at others isn’t a great sign, especially when Marvin Bartley recently admitted he has heard some players at Ibrox believe they can outlast their under-pressure manager [Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, 23 October].
