'I expect...' Pundit shares new Butland transfer verdict as last-minute Rangers exit mooted

Stephen McGinn has admitted he “would be surprised” if Jack Butland were to exit Rangers before the 30 August transfer deadline.

The England international was linked with a move away from Glasgow earlier this summer having reportedly been the subject of a last-minute approach from Nottingham Forest in January [Daily Record, 30 January].

Philippe Clement has insisted that the keeper is the only player not for sale this summer and Go Radio pundit McGinn believes both he and Gers captain James Tavernier are unlikely to make last-minute exits.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (27 August, 9:50) he said: “I would be surprised if Jack Butland left, I expect him to stay for another season.

“James Tavernier was the one this summer, I thought he would definitely be on his way out of Rangers but that looks like another one that has gone quiet.”

Will Jack Butland exit Rangers ahead of Ibrox transfer deadline?

While the Light Blues are eager to make some space on their wage bill this summer, the opening weeks of the season have demonstrated just how key both Tavernier and Butland are to Clement’s current project.

Both Englishmen have started each and every game of the league season and while they may not have reached their best levels, they have been fairly consistent ahead of the Old Firm derby against Celtic at Parkhead.

Of course, if a big offer was made in the final hours of the window, Rangers would have a decision to make, but time is running out for Clement and Nils Koppen to find sign replacements for any outgoing players.

Hopefully, Tavernier and Butland will remain Gers players beyond the transfer deadline and Clement will also be able to secure one or two new arrivals to slot in alongside them in the changing room before the windw closes.
