'I hate the fact...' - Pundit slams 'Top Keeper' Rangers loan exit with 'Talented' ace to follow permanently

Derek Ferguson has bemoaned the situation that has seen players stay at Rangers well into their 20s without getting regular football.

Goalkeeper Robby McCrorie is set for a medical at Kilmarnock ahead of a permanent Ibrox exit [Football Scotland, 9 July], having rejected a new contract earlier this summer after making just seven senior appearances by the age of 26 [Daily Record, 4 June].

That follows the latest loan move for fellow keeper Kieran Wright whose temporary switch to Airdrieonians was confirmed on 5 July, having still yet to make his first-team debut for the Light Blues at 25.

Ferguson is in no doubt of the talent both players possess but with the pathway to appearances blocked by star man Jack Butland the former Ibrox midfielder is all the more certain that those in that situation need to find a way to play regularly elsewhere.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “It’s up to the boy [Wright], it’s up to how he feels. I don’t know how old Kieran is now, he’ll be about 24 or 25. He played in the same youth team as Lewis [Ferguson] at Rangers.

“Lewis was let go at 14 but it was clear to see [Wright] was a top keeper. He’s been out on loan a few times.

“There must come a time where you need to get out and prove yourself. It’s like Robby, you need to get out and play first-team football.

“I hate the fact, I don’t know if I should be saying this, that players want to linger on and stay at a club over the age of 22-23 when you’ve not made a impact, where you’re a goalkeeper or whether you’re an out-field player, you need to get playing first-team football.

“So these guys are talented boys, that’s why they’re they’re at Rangers, but if you’re not getting you’re opportunity and you’ve got guys like Butland that are in you’re way get out and get playing somewhere, whether that’s in England or the Championship, just go and play first-team football.”

McCrorie’s departure feels like it has been a long time coming, especially once he was overlooked for the top job upon Allan McGregor’s retirement in favour of the Butland signing.

As long as the ex-England international remains in Philippe Clement’s squad, amid speculation over a big-money Premier League return, then he will play virtually every game.

Wright being 25 already without making his debut has been a source of surprise to some, and a permanent Rangers exit for him would be no surprise before long either.

In other Rangers news, a transfer has been confirmed after a club was priced out of the race for an exit-bound Light Blues man.
