Euro club want £4m+ Rangers ace as club chief hints at 'Official' announcement - report

Cagliari have emerged in the race to sign Cyriel Dessers from Rangers during the transfer window, according to Tutto Mercato Web.

The Italian outlet reported on their website (9 July) that the Serie A side are considering a move for the Ibrox striker, who is valued at €5million [£4.2m] by the Light Blues.

Cagliari’s sporting director Nereo Bonato indicated that a move of some sort has been made already, stating during the presentation to unveil new manager Davide Nicola that it would soon be made official.

However, it is unclear whether that refers to Dessers, 29, as the Italian suggested short-term moves were necessary as part of the club’s plan for growth from Serie B to safety in the top flight.

He said, translated to English: “Something has been sown and will soon be made official. It was necessary to integrate certain roles in the short term. We are on a journey that has taken us from Serie B to safety in Serie A. Now we want to grow. The group will remain, but with some corrections. There must be some exits to allow this growth. We are not at year zero. Our journey continues.”

The Nigerian international is expected to move on this summer despite 22 goals last term, with PAOK reported to be in talks over a move [Daily Mail, 25 June] and Rangers Review reporting on 3 July that Spanish and French clubs had come forward while Saudi Arabian clubs were also monitoring the situation.

Dessers proved he can have a significant impact last season, even though it was widely considered to not be as great as it should have been.

However, Philippe Clement inherited him from Michael Beale’s revamp last summer so if the Belgian wants his own men then space has to be made.

But if the former Cremonese man is going during the current window it would be better sealed sooner rather than later to give the manager and Nils Koppen as much time as possible to use that money to bring in a replacement.

Sam Lammers is also set to depart, but while the market for Dessers appears to be growing it is moving in the opposite direction for the Dutchman.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement looks ready to move on from Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers.

Hamza Igamane’s arrival could prove very useful and Danilo’s return from injury is another positive from last term, but if a headline signing such as Bojan Miovski or Lawrence Shankland isn’t considered doable [Scottish Daily Mail, 1 July] the squad still looks short.

Abdallah Sima returning from Brighton would improve things greatly after he appeared to hint at the possibility, but with preseason having started and Lammers left out of the first team for it [Rangers Review, 8 July] there appears to be a lot of work still to do and every day that passes now is one where Clement won’t get to work with new arrivals.

In other Rangers news, another first-team player has travelled for a medical ahead of a permanent move away from Ibrox.
