Ian Darke worries for Ange Postecoglou if his “second season” trophy comments do not come to fruition for Tottenham Hotspur this year.
The Australian went out on a limb and stated he “always wins something in [my] second season” at a club [Sky Sports, 17 September], which would mean if he can deliver once again, Tottenham would lift their first trophy since 2008.
TNT Sports commentator Darke admires the boldness of the Spurs head coach, but admits his “stroppy” nature with the press could worsen if form dips later on in the season and he is reminded of his declaration.
“His comments will keep getting thrown at him all season, although I kind of admire how bold he is”, Darke exclusively told Tottenham News.
“He might’ve created a PR problem for himself, however, and I think he’ll become irritated by the number of times the journalists bring it up this season; he’s got a little bit stroppy with the press already.
“I do think he’s quite interesting, though, and if he delivers he’ll have a lot of points in the bank. For a club like Tottenham, with the players who have come in and out the door during that time, it has been far too long.”
Tottenham Hotspur are more daring under Ange Postecoglou
Postecoglou’s comments come as little surprise when you look at his stint in English football so far.
The Spurs boss’ brazenness with his team selection, style of play and his direct attacking nature almost run parallel with how confident he is that he can end the notorious trophy drought in N17.
Tottenham are fighting on the European front once again and are among the frontrunners to advance far into the Europa League this season, having won their opening match against Qarabag with 10 men.
Postecoglou is an intriguing and spiky character, immersive to watch from an outsiders’ point of view, and his comments make for an even more box-office outlook at Spurs’ fortunes this season.
They are sure to be an exciting team for the remaining months of the campaign – and the head coach is bound to be an entertainment factor whether or not the Lilywhites do finally get their hands or trophy.
