'Made in a lab' - Wenham hails 'Perfect' Tottenham gem with same potential as Mikey Moore

John Wenham believes Tottenham Under-18 centre-back Junai Byfield has the same potential as Mikey Moore.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose has described the 16-year-old as “the perfect, modern-day progressive centre-back.”

Byfield has started all six of Spurs’ Under-18 Premier League matches this season, most recently the 1-0 win over Reading’s Under-18s at Hotspur Way (28 September), during which another 16-year-old also shone.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – is delighted with Byfield’s progress.

“He won’t get as many plaudits as someone like Mikey Moore,” Wenham said.

“However, in terms of actual potential, I think he might be of the same level. Every time I watch him play, he has pace, and power and he is good on the ball for a big centre-back.

“He just has every single attribute. It is as if he was made in a lab to be the perfect, modern-day progressive centre-back.

“He is a schoolboy player who is starting every game for the Under-18s. As a result, I am really pleased with his progress.”

Junai Byfield to shine at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou has plenty of exciting young centre-backs to keep an eye on in North London.

Ashley Phillips is currently playing his football with Stoke City, with a Premier League loan speculated for the 19-year-old. In addition, Luka Vušković is set to arrive at the club next season after his loan spell with Westerlo, while Micky van de Ven is only 23 years old himself.

And it looks as if Byfield can be added to this ever-growing list of centre-backs for Postecoglou to monitor.

With Cristian Romero’s long-term future at Tottenham in doubt (via TyC Sports, 9 September), any one of these young, exciting centre-backs could soon be replacing the World Cup winner.

In other Tottenham news, Daniel Levy will be wary of an investment opportunity after Newcastle United “trouble”.
