Ian Darke says Ange must change at Tottenham after what has happened recently

Ian Darke says Ange Postecoglou must employ several new plans to avoid Tottenham losing grip on Premier League matches.

Spurs came from behind to blow away West Ham United 4-1 last time out [19 October] with a ruthless display of attacking football but were turned over from a two-goal lead by Brighton before that.

TV commentator Darke, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, spoke previously of his admiration for the coach – but has admitted Spurs must be a little more pragmatic at times and become a “mean machine” when winning games.

“I think they need a plan B – every team needs a plan B – and probably a plan C as well. Tottenham need to become a bit more of a mean machine when they’ve established control in a match,” he said.

“There are games where they’re fully in control, but take Brighton for example. When you’re 2-0 up away from home, you should be able to just lock it up a little bit more, go a little more pragmatic, and see it through.

“I think that’s just professional, it’s not selling your soul. I think it’s right with others like Russell Martin, too. Don’t give the opposition a chance they don’t have in a game.”

Tottenham change needed by Ange Postecoglou

To Postecoglou’s credit, Tottenham have scored 18 goals in the Premier League this season, second only to Manchester City [19].

Defeats against Brighton and Newcastle United have shown deficiencies in the style of play, however, epitomised during a dismal spell in which they conceded 13 in four games between April and May at the end of last season.

First coming to the fore when Postecoglou ordered an all-out attack mission with nine men in an eventual 4-1 home defeat by Chelsea, his approach is one he admirably sticks to, and it remains to be seen how Spurs fare with the Australian’s tribal commitment to entertaining football.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs are ready to win the race to sign Liam Delap very shortly.
