Rangers chiefs deserve some rare praise as it has emerged they are set to shelve Ibrox expansion plans in favour of squad upgrades.
Hampden served as a temporary home to the Light Blues in the first month of the season after a multi-million project to improve facilities for disabled fans at Ibrox was delayed due to a steel shipment from China not arriving on time.
While the Gers are back home now, there were plans to make further improvements to the Broomloan and Sandy Jardine stands next year.
However, The Daily Record reported via their website on Friday (25 October) that the Rangers hierarchy, including interim chairman John Gilligan, are prepared to put those plans on hold and divert the funds to strengthen the squad with transfers instead.
Rangers chiefs deserve rare praise as common sense prevails
While the Ibrox expansion plans would have seen the stadium’s capacity rise above 51,500, the decision to prioritise squad upgrades is sensible.
It would be fair to say that Rangers fans would rather see the team sit atop the Scottish Premiership table than accommodate more fans while they are placed third in the standings as they are now.
Despite being only eight games into the league campaign, the Gers face an uphill battle to win the title, having fallen six points behind both Celtic and Aberdeen.
There is no doubt that the Light Blues need to strengthen their squad in the upcoming transfer windows to be able to return to the top, which is why the aforementioned news is appreciable.
Interestingly, Rangers’ poor performances have seen attendance for home games drop, with Ibrox yet to welcome over 49,000 fans this season.
This shows that some fans are voting with their feet and increasing the stadium capacity will not help unless the team are performing well.
In other Rangers news, this Light Blues star has been told he looks like a “little boy” in the Scottish Premiership.
