'I'm hearing': Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool have changed their mind and now want to keep £45m player

Liverpool have finally woken up in this summer’s transfer window.

The Reds haven’t signed a single player yet under Arne Slot, and fans are beginning to get concerned as the new Premier League season is just over a week away.

However, work is going on at Liverpool to sign Martin Zubimendi, and a couple more signings are expected before the window shuts.

That is exciting news for Liverpool fans, but in terms of outgoings, it looks like the Reds have changed their mind about one of their own players.

Fabrizio Romano shares Liverpool’s new stance on Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez has been in the news a lot over the last few weeks.

The Englishman had a really impressive season under Jurgen Klopp in 2023/24. He filled in across the backline and was brilliant in all positions. Klopp even branded Gomez as Liverpool’s ‘life-saver’ – that shows just how key he was.

However, Slot was ready to sell the versatile defender earlier in this window.

Reports revealed that Liverpool had agreed a £45 million deal to sell Gomez to Newcastle United, but that move collapsed in the 11th hour.

It was later claimed that Liverpool remain open to selling Gomez, but if Fabrizio Romano is to be believed now, the Reds have changed their mind.

The journalist has revealed that the Reds want to keep Gomez at the club. The player is not too keen to leave Anfield either in the coming weeks.

Unless a huge proposal arrives, that stance is unlikely to change.

Romano told GiveMeSport: “For Gomez, it’s not going to be easy [to leave] because they want to keep the player at the club. The player is also committed and not desperate to leave, from what I’m hearing.

“At the moment, he is not close to an exit. It always depends on the proposals. But, as of now, Liverpool will continue to plan with him.”

Should Liverpool cash in on Gomez?

Gomez’s situation is an interesting one for Liverpool.

The Reds have two players each available in both full-back positions at the moment – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley on the right and Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas on the opposite side.

Liverpool also have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah in the heart of the defence, while Sepp van den Berg has blown Slot away in training and is available for selection.

That reduces the need for Gomez, so we think Liverpool should let him go if they receive a big offer before the window shuts.

However, if no suitable bids come in, keeping hold of Gomez won’t be a bad idea at all.
