'I'm Shaking My Head' - Wyness: Chelsea now face European ban next year

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Chelsea have a “big headache” around potential European participation in the 2025-26 campaign.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Blues could be banned after their “puzzling” related-party deals.

As per The Times (28 August) Uefa has confirmed clubs will not be permitted to register earnings from selling assets to sister companies, placing Chelsea at risk of a potential financial breach.

Possible sanctions are believed to include a warning, a fine or even a team being barred from European competitions.

Chelsea have sold club hotels, part of the Cobham training ground and the club’s women’s side to a sister company over the past year to help offset the club’s major losses.

Those transactions are permitted under Premier League rules but the Blues will get no such reprieve from Uefa.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ve got a big headache for next year.

“I don’t think they’ll be banned from the Conference League for this season, but they’ve got a big problem if they are in Europe next year.

“That’s a big issue for the Chelsea management because they could be banned from Europe.

“They’ve taken this gamble, and it’s backfired.

“I’ve been shaking my head at many things they’ve been doing. It’s puzzling.

“Chelsea is becoming a deal-making company rather than a football club.

“It’s super clever private equity guys looking at putting a model in place, rather than looking at what it takes to win football matches.

“Everyone is going to be watching them now.”
