Jason Cundy admits he was “torn” over the decision to hand Jan Bednarek a yellow card for his challenge on Beto as Southampton beat Everton 1-0.

Speaking on talkSPORT (4 November, 11:41pm), Cundy and Dermot Gallagher discussed Bednarek’s challenge which denied Beto a run-through on goal at St Mary’s on 2 November.

Bednarek dragged back Beto as he burst in behind the stretched Saints defence, but was only shown a yellow card by referee Andy Madley, with VAR not stepping in either.

Cundy said: “There was also a situation that took place in the Everton game. Who was going through in on goal, was it Beto?

“I am so torn on this one because I think he gets to the ball before the covering defender – I think it’s possible, not obvious.

“But, if he gets there, he’s then got a 1v1, but that’s only a possible goalscoring opportunity, not obvious.”

Late refereeing drama overshadows Everton defeat at Southampton

This match was never likely to be one highest on quality given their spots in the Premier League, but Southampton and Everton made up for it with plenty of drama late on.

Poised at 0-0 well into the last quarter of an hour, Beto’s seemingly clear run-through on goal looked to be the game-breaking moment for the Blues, only for Bednarek to drag him down from behind.

The Polish defender not being given his marching orders proved to be the beginning of the end for Dyche’s side, who were exposed themselves nine minutes later as Adam Armstrong scored the winner.

That wouldn’t prove to be the end of the controversial moments though, with Beto firing in an equaliser in the final minute, only for VAR to intervene and send the Toffees back to square one once more.

A first defeat in six coming in such disputable circumstances makes this a game Dyche will be keen to move on from as soon as possible, but he will now come under pressure to avoid similar performances.

In other Everton news, Southampton sent a dig Sean Dyche’s way after the Toffees were denied a late equaliser at St. Mary’s.
