Keith Jackson has slammed the Rangers board due to the “incompetence” they’ve shown at Ibrox this season regarding the future of Philippe Clement.
The Belgian has been under severe scrutiny since the start of the term due to the poor form of his team in the Scottish Premiership, with his role at the club being brought under a magnifying glass after almost every game.
Writing for the Daily Record via their website (2 December), Jackson suggested Clement could have been sacked by now if not for the shambles behind the scenes.
“Meanwhile, across the city, Clement continues to fly by the seat of his pants, cobbling his Rangers side together on a game-by-game basis without any indication that he really knows what the outcome of his decisions might be,” he wrote.
“The Belgian might have scrambled his way to three points in Perth yesterday afternoon thanks to an own goal from Jason Holt but, one year into the job, there is still no identifiable style or substance to the manager’s work.
“And nothing to suggest he actually knows what it is that he is actually trying to achieve, other than survive in the job from one week to the next.
“It has felt as if Clement has been banking on the incompetence of the men up the stairs to blind them from what has been glaringly obvious to everyone else for quite some considerable time.”
Philippe Clement is on borrowed time at Rangers
The case of Clement is the main talking point to have come out at Rangers this season, with the club being consistently rumoured to be readying themselves to relieve the 50-year-old of his duties.
If Clement’s performance was solely judged on the Scottish League Cup and the Europa League then no questions would be asked.
The Gers have outperformed expectations in Europe this season, with their recent 4-1 win over Nice being the cherry on top of the cake.
The cup final against Celtic on 15th December will surely be a make-or-break game for the Belgian and, with Patrick Stewart officially taking on his role as Rangers’ CEO on 16 December, there will actually be members within the backroom staff who can make decisions.
If they lose the tie, it’s hard to see how the Gers would be able to justify keeping him in his role, even if they’re still doing well in the Europa League.
In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton reacted to a question that Kris Boyd asked him at half-time of the Gers’ clash against St Johnstone on Sunday.
