Rangers selling big-name senior players before the end of the transfer window is “inevitable”, according to Andy Devlin.

The Scottish Sun journalist was asked by colleague Roger Hannah on 12 July about whether the exit-linked Connor Goldson, Cyriel Dessers, Todd Cantwell and James Tavernier will be moving on this summer and replied that it will “need to happen”.

Shifting those players is seen as the only way Philippe Clement can fund his “massive rebuild” at Ibrox amid a warning that expectations for the season will need to be “tempered” when a lot of experience has already left and not yet been replaced.

Devlin added: “We’re three weeks away from the start of the season and Clement and Nils Koppen have their work cut out to try and shape this Rangers squad into his image and how he wants it to look moving forward.

“Clearly players that you mentioned are susceptible in that. If he’s going to be able to rebuild the team then some of these other guys will have to go.”

Cyriel Dessers also in line to leave Rangers under Philippe Clement

All for of the players mentioned have made major contributions at Ibrox at different times, none more so than record-breaking captain Tavernier.

But the fact is that for one reason or another most fans would not be devastated to see them moved on and a new era of key men brought in.

The changing of the guard was supposed to have been implemented a year ago under Michael Beale when the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield moved on.

But another managerial change and another Scottish Premiership title conceded to Celtic has seen the appetite for renewal remain in a big way.

Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe and Borna Barisic are all gone but the haul of new arrivals are primarily young and inexperienced, even if Connor Barron and Oscar Cortes should make an immediate impact.

Todd Cantwell’s time at Rangers could be up this summer.

Needing to make vital signings but being restricted by having to sell first is anything but the ideal situation for Clement and Koppen.

And when the market appears to be shrinking for unwanted names like Sam Lammers it could prove to be an extremely frustrating few weeks unless there is movement soon.

In other Rangers news, a significant reason why a move for Lawrence Shankland hasn’t been made looks to have now been removed.
