Ryan Jack admits Connor Barron will be having a “tough time” at Rangers as he deals with the “backlash” from Aberdeen supporters.
The former Gers midfielder left Ibrox earlier this summer when his contract expired seven years after he made his own switch from Pittodrie, with 21-year-old BArron arriving in his place after following the same route.
Jack told Gordon Duncan on The Warm-Up on 9 August that his successor has impressed to begin his Light Blues career and all he can do is block out the “irrelevant” criticism he will be getting from his former fanbase.
He said (28m 15s): “Yeah, no doubt he’ll be going through a tough time. There’s no doubt I think, as you touched on it, you do get the backlash but for him he’s just got to block that out. It’s irrelevant.
“He’s got to just focus on he’s at a huge club, he’s got a huge task, he’s came in and actually done really well his first couple of games. He’s got a huge task at the club and he needs to block out the outside noise and just focus on in the building.
“I’m sure everyone in the building will be supporting him as they did with me when I made the move. He’s started really well and I look forward to seeing him this season as well.”
Philippe Clement inserted Connor Barron into Rangers XI immediately
The Gers and the Dons don’t have the easiest of relationships at the best of times and Jack will know better than probably anyone what it will be like for Barron at present.
His arrival at Ibrox hasn’t even been put to bed in an official capacity with Aberdeen ready to take the Rangers to a tribunal over the compensation fee after rejecting the offer from Govan.
Another former Gers midfielder, Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson, believes a very fair amount was put on the table and warned tribunals don’t always pan out as a club hopes.
A potential move for Bojan Miovski was similarly deemed impossible due to the issues with negotiating between the two hierarchies.
In many ways it is a shame that Jack has left when Philippe Clement has struggled mightily to secure a new senior midfielder after moves for Kenny McLean and Joan Jordan both fell through.
The 32-year-old would probably be the ideal mentor for Barron in Glasgow but his long-term fitness problems saw him go without a contract extension.
It has been suggested a deal was there to be done on something like a pay-as-you-play basis [Keith Jackson, 4 August] but that ship looks to have sailed.
If Barron is having a difficult time then he doesn’t look to be shying away from his new challenge as he has put himself about admirably in his first few games under Clement.
Although there is a suspicion that the manager could help him and his midfield partner Mohamed Diomande out by altering the formation to give them more defensive cover.
In other Rangers news, a mind-blown pundit has issued a “crucial” transfer verdict on an exit-linked star man.
