'It surprised me...' - Clement decision in Rangers win over St Johnstone catches Boyd off guard

Rangers substituting Robin Propper for Leon Balogun at half-time of their visit to St Johnstone has surprised Kris Boyd live on Sky Sports.

Propper appeared to be struggling with an injury issue early on at McDiarmid Park but adapted throughout the first half, before being replaced by Balogun at the interval.

Chris Sutton posed the question to Boyd [1 December, 13:03] as to whether it came as a shock when presenter Eilidh Barbour revealed the news of Philippe Clement’s call.

Sutton asked: “Does that surprise you?”

“Balogun for Propper? It surprised me that he lasted 45 minutes, because he was down after five minutes, managed to get through and then he’s coming off [at half-time],” Boyd admitted.

Rangers and Clement have a sweat on following their journey back to Glasgow from Perth to see the potential extent of Propper’s injury.

Supporters are waiting on whether the half-time withdrawal was a precautionary measure, with Ridvan Yilmaz also replacing Nedim Bajrami at the break.

Propper has attracted a mixed reception since his arrival from the Netherlands in the summer, given he was one of the only experienced heads brought in and for a price tag to boot.

The 31-year-old performed well upon his return to the side in consecutive games against Dundee United and the memorable Europa League rout of Nice, but looked very uncertain on Sunday and has been doubted under Clement.

Balogun, the club’s oldest senior player at 36, may have to be relied upon more than was initially intended when he signed a one-year contract extension back in June.
