'I've Heard From My Sources' - Keith Wyness: Everton star 'in negotiations' to join Arsenal

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed “negotiations are ongoing” to take star midfielder Amadou Onana to Arsenal this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the 22-year-old is likely to go even if the Merseysiders’ takeover is completed.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (17 June) that Everton are expecting to receive some “cheeky” bids from clubs looking to sign midfielder Onana before 30 June.

The club’s accounts don’t roll over until the start of next month and it is believed the Toffees need to make a big sale to avoid another Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach.

Arsenal have long been credited with an interest in the Belgium international, who is playing for his nation at the European Championships in Germany.

Onana made 30 starts in 37 appearances in the 2023-24 campaign, notching three goals and one assist from midfield.

Wyness suggested the former Lille star, who is under contract until June 2027, could be sacrificed to keep Jarrad Branthwaite at Everton.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I still think there will still be sales this summer, even if there is a takeover.

“Onana is one who I think will go. I believe from my sources there is interest from Arsenal, and that’s something which could materialise.

“He’s exactly the kind of player Arteta likes, and I’ve heard certainly that negotiations are ongoing.

“We’d all like to keep Branthwaite. The way Man United and Ratcliffe have handled that negotiation has been very poor.

“As for Everton, the point is that everything we do is managed for the long-term, and the age of the squad is at the core of that.

“Friedkin and his advisors, I expect to see a clear strategy from them. Part of that will be protecting who needs to be protected, and selling the players who need to be sold.

“In the end, we’ll come out with a better squad.”
