Liverpool summer signing Federico Chiesa made his full debut for Arne Slot’s side in Wednesday night’s League Cup meeting with West Ham.
The Reds snapped up the Italy international from Juventus for a fee reportedly worth a mere £12.5million in total.
Prior to Liverpool’s game against the Hammers, Chiesa had made two cameos off the bench for the Reds.
On Wednesday, Slot handed the Azzurri ace his first start for Liverpool, and he gave a good account of himself.
Chiesa provided the assist for Diogo Jota’s opener with an acrobatic hook towards goal that the Portugal international finished off.
Then, in the 40th minute, Chiesa got the better of Vladimir Coufal with a cheeky nutmeg that took him to the by-line.
Although the ensuing cross didn’t come to anything, it looked like the Chiesa of old, and Jamie Carragher loved what he saw from the Italian.
Jamie Carragher says Federico Chiesa showed ‘glimpse’ of £80m player
“Chiesa was a £80million player a few years ago,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “He showed a glimpse there.”
Chiesa lasted until the hour mark, when Mohamed Salah replaced him on the pitch, and the former Juve man received a standing ovation for his efforts.
Liverpool secure heavy win over West Ham
Admittedly, the Reds didn’t find it particularly easy against the Hammers, and only led 2-1 until the 73rd minute as the visitors looked for an equaliser.
However, Salah made it 3-1 for Liverpool in the 74th minute, pretty much confirming the Reds’ victory, and Cody Gakpo then added gloss to the scoreline with a late brace.
And so Liverpool run out 5-1 winners and secure a spot in the next round.
