Ianis Hagi will only leave Rangers for Romania in order to play for his father’s club Farul Constantana, according to Gheorghe Hagi himself.

The Romanian legend reacted to interest in the exit-linked Gers attacker from Rapid Bucharest to dismiss the possibility.

Hagi Junior wants to stay at Ibrox and has now turned down the chance to move to Rapid [Sky Sports, 26 August], where the club were looking to spend the money they received for selling Albion Rrahmani [Fanatik, 20 August].

Hagi Senior said, via journalist Emanuel Rosu on X (26 August): “”Forget about it. If he’s coming to Romania, he’s only joining my club [Farul]”.

Ianis Hagi rejects Rangers exit to Rapid Bucharest

Hagi has put the pressure back on the Light Blues by turning down what appears to be the only option for him to leave currently.

He reportedly had terms wrapped up on a deal to join Fiorentina earlier this summer [SportpeSure, 21 July], but no move has materialised.

Philippe Clement has told the 25-year-old he can leave despite the desire to remain [Sky Sports, 12 August], with the wage-rise clause in his contract seemingly a key sticking point for the club [Daily Record, 13 August].

But unless Rangers want to give him a pay off to leave then Hagi is within his rights to stick the contract the club gave him less than two years ago in December 2022, and it can hardly be held against him when he is seemingly exhibiting all the commitment a manager usually wants to see.

Rangers ace Ianis Hagi will not play for Rapid Bucharest.

Unlike Todd Cantwell he not only doesn’t want to leave but is actively hoping to stay and contribute, and despite being left in the B Team he is still turning out and putting in strong performances.

Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson has suggested talks could be held internally to find a way around the contract clause and get him playing, because as things stand nobody is benefiting.

And it doesn’t look like Farul have plans to put an offer on the table for Hagi to fulfil his father’s claims any time soon.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are expected to be busy up to the deadline after making a seven-figure offer.
