Journalist tells Dan Friedkin 'Most important' Everton decision ahead of takeover

Everton appointing a sporting director will be the “most important” decision for Dan Friedkin, Ian Croll says.

The Reach journalist has urged The Friedkin Group to focus on the boardroom infrastructure before appointing a new manager — with the new owners mooted to possibly sack Sean Dyche once their takeover is complete [Liverpool Echo, 29 November].

It has been suggested that TFG could complete their acquisition of the Blues in the coming days [Alan Myers, 9 December].

On the Royal Blue podcast [10 December], Croll said: “The most important decision the Friedkins need to make is who is the sporting director or director of football.

“For me, that decision is more important than who the next manager is going to be. The infrastructure behind the club is more important than who could be the head coach.

“If you bring in a manager who’s successful, then at least we would have the infrastructure… like Brighton have done. They’ve lost a couple of managers over the years, but they manage to just replace them. The director of football is the most important decision the Friedkins are ever going to make.”

Everton need stability under Dan Friedkin

Farhad Moshiri’s reign has been accompanied by uncertainty and bad decisions, with the British-Iranian businessman failing to get the Toffees back to competing with the big boys.

The Blues have had several managers since David Moyes’ departure, but none of them have been able to bring stability to the Merseyside outfit.

Dyche came to Goodison during a difficult period and has done relatively well, considering the shoddy recruitment under Moshiri and Kevin Thelwell — whose future should be under scrutiny when TFG arrive.

Everton have regressed over the years, fighting relegation, and the situation in the boardroom has reflected on the pitch.

While the Goodison faithful need to cut Dyche some slack, the English head coach has shown that he can’t progress with the squad at his disposal.

The style of play under the 53-year-old hasn’t been pleasing, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave in the coming months.

TFG can usher in a new era at the Merseyside outfit, and their initial decisions will be key in determining whether their takeover will be fruitful.
