Journalist urges Rangers to ignore fans in new Clement sack verdict

Matthew Lindsay has advised Rangers to ignore shouts to sack Philippe Clement and sticky by the manager.

With the Gers sitting six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership, a section of fans want Clement gone.

However, Lindsay believes the Belgian tactician has done well at Ibrox with limited resources and doubts someone else can do better.

The journalist told the Light Blues to avoid the temptation to pull the plug on Clement and back him with resources and trust instead.

“The current man in charge is an experienced and accomplished coach who has enjoyed his successes at home and abroad since arriving in this country”, he wrote in his column for The Herald [26 October].

“Could somebody else really have done a better job with the limited resources the Belgian has had to work with?

“Could a replacement really transform his side into the dominant force in the land overnight?

“The Rangers hierarchy need to stand firm, ignore any unrest that may arise in the stands, give their guy the structure, backing and players he requires to achieve his objectives and stop the hire-and-fire managerial merry-go-round they have been on since Gerrard departed. But it will be a surprise if they do.”

Philippe Clement running out of time at Rangers

Gordon Dalziel reckons John Gilligan will not decide to sack Clement as the club’s interim chairman, which means the 50-year-old could be afforded time until a new chairman and CEO are in place.

Another reason Clement’s job could be safe for now is sacking him would cost the Light Blues a few million (David Edgar). They would want to avoid that as they are already low on resources.

However, the Gers hierarchy could find it hard to not sack him if things do not get better and more fans start voicing their opinion against the manager.

Wednesday’s (30 October) Premiership clash with Aberdeen at Pittodrie could be the nail in the coffin for the former Monaco boss.

Derek McInnes has been mooted as a potential replacement for Clement by some and there is no doubt about the Scot’s tactical acumen.

However, like Lindsay wrote, no one can be sure if another manager would be able to turn Rangers into title contenders overnight.
