Keith Jackson says Clement has hit back against all odds after what he has done at Rangers

Philippe Clement is turning things around at Rangers after only being spared the sack due to a lack of authority above him at Ibrox, according to Keith Jackson.

Writing for the Daily Record (23 December), Jackson said that the only reason Clement didn’t lose his job back in October was because of the “rudderless” nature of the Ibrox boardroom at the time.

The recent matches against Tottenham in Europe and Celtic in the League Cup Final were billed as Clement’s curtain call, but solid performances in both and four straight league wins have changed the narrative.

Jackson said: “For his part, Philippe Clement was only hanging onto his job because rudderless Rangers didn’t have anyone with the authority or mandate to sack him.

“A double-header against Spurs and Celtic was almost certain to bring around his inevitable demise – and yet now here we all are against all the odds, with Clement’s credentials intact.”

Philippe Clement proving the doubters wrong at Rangers

Having been a whopping 13 points behind Celtic in the Premiership title race a matter of weeks ago, the form shown by Clement’s side is beginning to bridge the gap as they hit their straps on multiple fronts.

After dispatching Dundee on Saturday, the Light Blues have now won their last four league games without conceding a single goal, climbing back up to second place and cutting that gap to nine points.

The Bears remain a long way off catching Celtic – who drew 0-0 at Dundee United on Sunday – but with the second Old Firm match in quick succession coming up on 2 January, Clement can make a statement.

Hampden Park bore witness to one of the best finals in recent history as the two Glasgow rivals played out a 3-3 draw before Celtic’s win on penalties, with Gers being denied a stone-wall penalty late on.

That League Cup Final loss in agonising circumstances will only add fuel to the fire as Clement looks to go full circle and show Celtic that they’re far from the only team competing in this season’s title race.

In other Rangers news, one journalist has given his view on the Gers’ prospects of signing a new midfielder this January.
