Chris Sutton raised a Rangers accusation at Robbie Savage after he dismissed Ange Postecoglou’s achievements with Celtic.
Assessing Tottenham’s 6-3 defeat to Liverpool at home on Sunday (22 December), Savage insisted that Postecoglou must stop setting his team up like he did in other countries, including Scotland, due to the quality in the Premier League.
However, Sutton, who is often critical of Rangers, took offence at it and claimed that the former Leicester midfielder wanted to take a “cheap” shot at Scottish football as he is salty about allegedly Ally McCoist turning him down at Ibrox.
“You wanted to have a cheap shot at Scottish football, that’s what you wanted to do and be dismissive [about Postecoglou]”, Sutton said on BBC Radio 5’s 606 (22 December).
“You wanted to sign for Rangers when they were in division three and Ally McCoist turned you down.
“You wanted to go there for free and he didn’t want to take you.
“I’m just saying you weren’t good to play for Rangers when they were in division three and you’re having a pop at Scottish football. It’s just unnecessary.”
Savage, meanwhile, saw the funny side to it and said: “I was 42.”
Chris Sutton beats Robbie Savage with Rangers stick on BBC as Postecoglou claim made
Postecoglou joined Tottenham ahead of the 2023-24 season after a successful two-year spell at Celtic.
The Greek-Australian manager led to the Parkhead outfit to five trophies, including two Premiership titles, but has struggled to reach similar heights in North London.
Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League in the 59-year-old first season in charge and sit 11th after 17 games this term.
Postecoglou has come in for a lot of criticism for refusing to change his tactics according to the opposition and players available at Spurs.
Philippe Clement’s side notably held the Premier League side to a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Europa League on 12 December.
There is no doubt that Rangers fans would have been delighted to see the manager leave Celtic after he won the league in both of his seasons in Glasgow.
That is not to say things have improved for the Light Blues, who finished eight points behind the Hoops last season.
As for Sutton and Savage, they are no strangers to having a go at each other while on air.
In other Rangers news, a new Light Blues transfer update has emerged from Belgium amid interest in this midfielder.
