Keith Jackson shares next Clement transfer focus at Rangers

Rangers need to focus on signing more “experienced recruits” in the next stage of their transfer business this summer, according to Keith Jackson.

Writing in the Daily Record’s print edition (8 July, page 49), Jackson said that while signing five young players could prove to be “shrewd business”, the club also need to bring in more experienced heads.

Jackson labelled Philippe Clement’s focus on youthful signings a “fishing expedition” but warned that the Gers squad is still lacking when it comes to players who aren’t solely players for the future and said “three or four” elder statesmen are required.

Clement’s side have made six signings in total so far this summer, only one of which – former Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly – is over the age of 21, while only three have played in the Premiership before [Sky Sports, 22 May].

Rangers rebuild set to consist of several more transfers yet

Jackson undoubtedly has a point when it comes to the range of signings Clement needs to make at Ibrox this summer, but the Belgian’s squad overhaul still has some distance to go before he’s satisfied [Chris Jack, 6 July].

While Kelly, Connor Barron, and returning loanee Oscar Cortes all have Premiership experience going into next season, the Gers’ three other signings represent unknown quantities for top-flight defences too.

Clinton Nsiala and Jefte could provide the steely, determined attitudes that were lacking towards the back end of last season at Ibrox, while Hamza Igamane could spring some surprises in attack too [Daily Record, 3 July].

The Light Blues’ squad rebuild could well total double figures by the end of the window, and while the club are still chasing young players, older heads like Kenny McLean have also been heavily linked [Chris Jack, 7 July].

The speed at which remaining signings – both youthful and experienced – come into the club remains to be seen, but with the new season fast-approaching, Clement will hope to conclude his business as soon as possible.

In other Rangers news, new obstacles have emerged for the club following an update on Ibrox’s redevelopment this summer.
