Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Brendan Rodgers can “turn things around” and get Celtic back on track in the Champions League this season.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Scottish champions’ recent result against Borussia Dortmund was “embarrassing”.
Celtic lost 7-1 against the Bundesliga side in their second group stage game on the back of their 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava in their opening fixture.
Rodgers’s side still have to make the trips to Atalanta, Dinamo Zagreb and Aston Villa in the competition, while they will face RB Leipzig, Club Brugge and Young Boys at home.
Celtic backed to qualify for Champions League knockout rounds
Wyness has insisted Celtic have enough quality to make it through to the knockout rounds despite their recent European setback.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Celtic used to be judged against how they did against Rangers.
“Now they seem to beat Rangers quite regularly and it is being judged about how they get on in Europe. I think that’s exactly what they’re looking at right now.
“I think the board will back any manager that is in there, it’s whether Brendan gets to stay on and do it. He knows it was embarrassing.
“There have been some bad results for them in Europe and 7-1 is particularly embarrassing, but I think he can turn it around.
“I looked at some of the fixtures in the Champions League coming up and they’ve got a chance to turn this round again and get back on track.
“If they can get a reasonable group stage and qualify going forward, then that will be enough.
“I think that will satisfy the board for this particular European season because it would be an improvement over last year.
“It will be judged against last year’s European performance and how well they do this year.
“But I think Celtic have got the chance. They’ve got some good players there.
“It’s up to Brendan to produce it on the night.”
