Celtic told to hand Auston Trusty new role in 'incredible' twist

Celtic won’t see the best of new signing Auston Trusty until he’s able to form a defensive partnership with fellow American Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie suggested the 26-year-old would be better suited playing as a left-sided centre-back, but admits he’s ‘getting sharper’ after coming into the starting eleven.

Trusty has started all of Celtic’s last four games across all competitions since Carter-Vickers picked up a toe injury at the start of the season.

Republic of Ireland international Liam Scales is manager Brendan Rodgers’ preferred option on the left side of the centre of defence.

The defender has been named in Mauricio Pochettino’s first squad as USA manager as they prepare for games against Panama and arch-rivals Mexico.

The Parkhead faithful may get the chance to see the duo in action in their top-of-the-table clash against Aberdeen once the international break is over, as manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed Carter-Vickers will return to training this week.

“To be fair to the boy, I think he’s playing the wrong side.”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“He’s a left-footed player, I think when Carter-Vickers is back he’ll get put in there so we can see what kind of partnership they have.

“I think he’s getting better, in the last couple of games, he looked raw when he first came in.

“I know how he feels, when you’re playing in England, it’s not as quick as what it is in Scotland, the pace of the game is just incredible.

“He’s got to get sharper, he is getting sharper and I’m looking forward to having a look at that partnership.

“I’m sure the American manager will want to see them playing together as well.”
