John Wenham was shocked to see Claudio Ranieri appointed as Roma boss as Tottenham prepare to take on the Italian side on Thursday.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes there “is a bit of something” between the 73-year-old and Tottenham after he lifted the Premier League title with Leicester City during the 2015/16 season.
It was recently announced via Roma’s official website [14 November] that Ranieri had been appointed as head coach, marking his third spell in charge of the club he once represented as a player.
Ranieri was beaten in his first game back in charge of I Giallorossi, losing 1-0 to Napoli in the Serie A at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Sunday [24 November].
His second game since his return to Roma will take place in the UEFA Europa League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium [28 November].
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has admitted he didn’t realise the Italian was still involved with football.
“Ranieri has of course once again been appointed as Roma manager,” Wenham said.
“I was quite surprised by that if I’m being honest. I thought he had sort of retired and given up with football. However, here he is again.
“Obviously he beat Tottenham to the Premier League title with Leicester City. As a result, there is a bit of something there.”
Claudio Ranieri to upset Tottenham once again?
Spurs supporters will no doubt remember Ranieri’s time in the Premier League well.
While most football fans were delighted to see an underdog such as Leicester City beat the odds and lift the Premier League, considering Spurs were the Foxes’ closest challengers, supporters in North London likely weren’t as thrilled.
Therefore, Spurs will be keen for their side to prevent Ranieri from getting one over on the club once again.
Ange Postecoglou could make as many as six changes for the clash as Tottenham aim to make it back-to-back wins after their 4-0 Premier League victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium [23 November].
However, the Australian will be without Cristian Romero after an injury update on Wednesday [via Spurs’ official website, 27 November], which will make things more difficult.
In other Tottenham news, the club have been named as an ideal destination for an exit-linked Bayern Munich player.
