Fraser Forster will begin his extended run in the first team at Tottenham after Ange Postecoglou shared that he will not sign a replacement for the injured Guglielmo Vicario.
The Italian sustained a broken ankle in the 4-0 win against Manchester City on Saturday [23 November] and will undergo surgery to correct the injury, resulting in months on the sidelines.
Postecoglou will call upon deputy Forster to replace Vicario in the starting lineup to face Roma in the Europa League and for the foreseeable future.
The Spurs boss revealed in his pre-match press conference that he has no plans to enter the transfer market for Vicario’s replacement.
Forster has been resigned to European appearances in North London this term, and, if his performances are any indication of what the supporters can expect, he will reward the faith bestowed upon him by Postecoglou.
Fraser Forster deserves his chance at Tottenham
As Postecoglou explained in the press conference, he doesn’t require his goalkeepers to play like “Maldini or Platini” with the ball at their feet and prefers a more straightforward approach.
This ideology suits Forster down to the ground as he has proved throughout his illustrious career he is much more capable with the ball heading towards his net than at his feet.
However, the 36-year-old can influence the build-up play for Tottenham – in his Europa League outings against AZ Alkmaar and Galatasaray, he completed 89 per cent and 79 per cent of his passes respectively [Sofascore].
While his ability to find teammates further up the pitch is limited, with 25 per cent and 27 per cent long ball completion in both outings, thankfully, Forster will only be required to utilise his skills with his feet as necessary for Spurs.
Indeed, even as he approaches his 40s, Forster is proving to be a more than capable shot-stopper for Tottenham and is displaying no drop-off in his ability to continue at the Premier League level.
Against Alkmaar, he made three saves, preventing 0.60 goals, and successfully completed one run out to close down the opposition, resulting in one last-ditch tackle to secure his clean sheet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
When he faced Galatasaray, Forster made five saves, preventing -0.21 goals despite conceding three times in Istanbul.
Spurs have been touted with a move for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford [talkSPORT], but Postecoglou does not need to needlessly waste his transfer kitty with a player of Forster’s quality waiting in the wings to impress in North London.
