John Gilligan looked as if he “didn’t have a care in the world” when Roger Hannah bumped into him recently but that is expected to have changed after being drafted in as Rangers chairman.
The Scottish Sun journalist said on the outlet’s Coffee Club on YouTube (18 September) that the “terrific” businessman will be looking for new investment and someone to replace him as soon as possible to help address the club’s poor current predicament.
Gilligan stepped in suddenly after John Bennett’s health-related resignation was announced last weekend (14 September).
Hannah said (14m): “I bumped into John Gilligan in the Co-Op a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning getting the Sunday papers, and he looked like a man who didn’t have a care in the world. I’m sure that’s changed in the last seven days.
“Listen, he’s very well connected, he’s got a terrific business career behind him, he does know about Rangers, he has been in there before, he came in in 2015 with Dave King and Paul Murray, steadied the ship. He will be looking for somebody to take that chairmanship off him, and also looking for people to put money in.
“Because John knows as well as anyone where Rangers are right now, on and off the park, is now where they want to be.”
Asked by Robert Grieve if maybe the “minted” journalist wanted to put some cash in himself Hannah burst out laughing and replied: “Absolutely not”.
John Bennett resigned from Rangers for health reasons
No matter what sort of form Philippe Clement manages to cobble together on the pitch the club needs stability at the top to really move forward.
Bennett was left swamped with responsibilities after James Bisgrove’s sudden exit left him holding the baby when the Ibrox building work debacle emerged, at the same time as looking for the Englishman’s successor.
Hearts’ Andrew McKinlay was linked [Daily Record, 23 Jun] before St Mirren’s Jim Gillespie reached an advanced stage of talks but pulled out [Daily Mail, 10 September], at which point Adrian Bevington emerged as a potential candidate.
Despite Dave King’s public overtures to return at Ibrox as chairman on a two-year basis it is expected to be a new chief executive which is Gilligan’s main priority to start with [Chris Jack, 17 September].
King talked up investment arriving amid interest from Saudi Arabia and the USA if he were to come back in [Rangers Review, 15 September], but whether his contacts could be utilised by Gilligan remains to be seen.
There is no shortage of major questions that need answering at Ibrox and they are unlikely to be tackled all at once with only a skeleton hierarchy in place, so the sooner a CEO is brought in the better so new money can then be prioritised.
In other Rangers news, a well-known and respected Gers shareholder will be a regular at Ibrox under Gilligan according to Chris Jack.
