Derek McInnes taking a job at a “bigger” club is “ludicrous” after his Kilmarnock side lost 6-0 to Rangers at Ibrox, according to Jonny McFarlane.
The Newsquest Scotland journalist posted on X (4 December), slamming suggestions that the job McInnes has done at Rugby Park should put him in the sights of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
Philippe Clement’s Gers put Kilmarnock to the sword with a 6-0 battering in Govan, with five of their goals coming in a one-sided second half to leave McInnes’ side a point above the relegation play-offs.
McFarlane said: “Killie a point off the relegation play-off spot. They’ve been dismal at Ibrox and offered almost nothing.
“Derek McInnes having a very poor season by his standards. Talk of a bigger job ludicrous as it stands. A significant regression.”
Derek McInnes Rangers links look laughable after Kilmarnock win
The Gers’ last meeting with Kilmarnock didn’t go anywhere near as swimmingly as their 6-0 thrashing on Wednesday, losing 1-0 at Rugby Park following a last-minute error from John Souttar.
In the aftermath of that crushing blow for Clement’s side, many a pundit mooted McInnes as a manager who could make the step up to Old Firm level, having previously been linked with a move to Ibrox.
Based on this trip to Govan, however, McInnes didn’t have the best of evenings in the dugout, as his side fell apart in the second period having given Gers the odd scare in a much more even first-half.
McInnes had no answer to a formidable attacking display from Clement’s side – which has been a rarity in the Premiership this season – with Killie at sixes and sevens in defence and hit for six in the process.
It’s a win which will certainly relieve the pressure Clement has come under so far this term, but if the Belgian were to lose his job, turning attention towards McInnes would be a massive step backwards.
