Man United face 'massive' problem after Ruben Amorim twist - Insider

Man United will face “massive problems” if they fail to reach an agreement for Ruben Amorim to become their next manager, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected, exclusively told Football Insider that alternative options could be put off as the club have made their first choice clear.

Erik ten Hag was dismissed as United manager on 28 October after a dismal start to the season, with Amorim quickly emerging as the top contender for the job.

It was said that other managers, should they be approached, are now aware of their place in United’s initial pecking order, which could cause issues in negotiations.

Reports have claimed that communications are ongoing with Sporting CP to reach an agreement over the compensation fee, as he has a £8.3million (€10million) release clause.

This came after Football Insider exclusively revealed early on Monday that United had opened talks with the Portuguese boss and discussions had begun before Ten Hag was sacked.

However, there is a growing concern about the direction the club will head in if they are unable to reach an agreement with the club.

Amorim has emerged as the top target to take over from Ten Hag after winning last season’s Liga Portugal, and his side have won all nine of their league games so far this season.

Brown, who also spent a period as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two at Old Trafford, has insisted the board must get a deal for Amorim over the line because the alternatives will now be questioning their position in the club’s plans.

“It’ll be a massive problem if they don’t get Amorim,” he told Football Insider.

“Because where do they go from there?

“They’ll have names on a list, other options and managers they will want to speak to if they can’t reach an agreement with Sporting.

“But the alternatives now know that they weren’t the first choice.

“So that can make things difficult if you’re trying to convince them to take over.

“The club have made their priorities clear by going all-in on Amorim, which is fine, but only if they can get a deal signed and over the line.

“They have to make sure they get it right, because otherwise it could be a nightmare for them.”
