Man United Insider: Eddie Howe would be 'tempted' by offer

Eddie Howe is tempted by the idea of taking over at Man United amid speculation and growing pressure on the future of Erik ten Hag.

This is according to former Man United chief scout and assistant manager Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected at Old Trafford, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Newcastle United boss would back himself to deal with the club’s ongoing issues.

This comes despite Howe confirming in a recent press conference that he is not entertaining the idea of leaving St James’ Park and remains committed to the plans in place.

The Magpies have won three, drawn three and lost two of their opening eight games this season in a mixed start which has been shrouded by poor performances.

However, the club remain committed to backing the manager, while he is keen to repay that faith and continue the project he has started in the North East.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, has faced mounting pressure at Old Trafford as his side have won just four of their first 12 games of the season across all competitions.

Football Insider revealed that the Man United board met during the international break to discuss the boss’ future and considerations for the direction of the club.

Despite a win against Brentford last time out, doubts remain about the long-term future of the club with Ten Hag in charge, and the United hierarchy have already begun assessing their options.

Among those options is Howe, and Brown, who spent over a decade at the club during their most successful period, has insisted the Newcastle boss could be tempted to make the switch should the position become available.

“I’ve heard he’d be tempted by the opportunity,” he told Football Insider.

“No matter the situation the club finds itself in, anybody would be temped by that offer.

“There are major problems which need overhauling, but it’s a great place to be and it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“Howe, I believe, would back himself to sort out some of those problems, and that would get the crowd on his side.

“He’s got a very good reputation. I’ve never worked with him personally but I’ve heard nothing but good things about him and his management.

“I don’t think there are that many candidates in the frame for the job now.

“If Ten Hag was sacked tomorrow, where would they go next? That’s why the owners haven’t pulled the trigger, and that’s why Howe’s name is on their list.

“They obviously feel that if they pull the trigger, he would consider taking over.”
